‘88 Hershiser
I’m still baffled when I look at the stats from Orel Hershiser’s ‘88 season with the Dodgers.
59 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, 23 wins, 15 complete games, 2.26 ERA and the unanimous Cy Young award winner.
As if that wasn’t enough, he started Game 1 and 3 against the Mets in the NLCS, recorded a save in Game 4 and pitched a shutout in a Game 7 win.
In the World Series, he pitched a shutout in Game 2 and allowed just two runs in the series clinching victory.
When asked about what made Hershiser so great, Sandy Koufax said:
“The key to Orel’s success is his constant striving for perfection. Perfectionists are usually given a bad name but there’s nothing wrong with trying to be better than you are, the best you can be.”
